Zines and Book-Binding with Jillian Sandell

Zines take center stage in this hands-on workshop that celebrates the power of DIY and do it together publishing. These handmade, self published booklets connect to a rich world of pamphlets, chapbooks, and blogs, offering an accessible and flexible format for sharing stories, ideas, and creative expression. Drawing from her 30 plus year collection, Jillian introduces participants to common zine styles and guides them through at least three different construction methods, including 8 page and 16 page mini zines folded from a single sheet of paper, quarter and half page formats with varied bindings, and accordion styles. Participants will also collaborate on a group zine that will be mailed out after class, and each person will leave with at least three handmade zines plus the skills and confidence to keep creating and sharing long after the workshop ends. The registration fee is 35 dollars.

NEW Jazz Orchestra—Organizational Meeting

The Joshua Tree Cultural Center is launching the Joshua Tree Jazz Orchestra, a dynamic new ensemble created by the team behind the acclaimed Joshua Tree Philharmonic and rooted in the creative pulse of Joshua Tree. Celebrating the full spectrum of jazz from swing and Latin to big band, bebop, and modern chart driven repertoire, the orchestra aims to build a vibrant community of musicians eager to perform and collaborate. Instrumentalists are invited to an organizational meeting on April 7, 2026 at 6:30 pm in the Cultural Center’s Blak Box Theater, where the vision, rehearsal schedule, and performance goals will be shared. Directed by Bill Barrett, this ground floor gathering offers saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonists, pianists, bassists, guitarists, drummers, and other jazz players the chance to connect, contribute, and help shape an exciting new chapter in the desert’s music scene.

RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEINS-CINDERELLA

The 2013 Broadway adaptation of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella reimagines the classic fairytale with a fresh, modern perspective while preserving the beloved music from the original 1957 television musical. The story follows Ella, a kind and determined young woman longing for a life beyond her stepmother’s cruelty, who with the help of her Fairy Godmother attends the royal ball and captures the attention of Prince Topher, a royal searching for meaning as much as romance. This version empowers Ella with greater agency, highlighting her intelligence, compassion, and commitment to justice as she actively shapes her own future. Featuring iconic songs like “In My Own Little Corner” and “Ten Minutes Ago,” along with new orchestrations and added material, this production blends charm, humor, and heart into a timeless story that resonates with today’s audiences.

Big Bear Polar Plunge 2026

Tin Embossing: The Art of Repujado Workshop with Cesar Garcia

Artist Cesar Garcia leads a hands on workshop in the art of tin embossing, also known as repujado, guiding participants through the process of transforming thin metal sheets into striking dimensional artwork using simple stylus tools. Working from the reverse side, attendees transfer their own custom designs, press and shape the surface, refine textures, and watch as their images rise to life through light and shadow. By the end of the session, each participant completes a radiant decorative piece ready to display as an ornament, framed artwork, or small metal print. Based in San Bernardino, Garcia is a skilled printmaker specializing in xylography, pyrography, stencil, and airbrushing, and co founder of Grafica Nocturna, a collective dedicated to preserving traditional printmaking practices. His work has been exhibited at the The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, Angels Gate Cultural Center, and the Ontario Museum of History & Art, bringing deep artistic expertise to this welcoming, all levels workshop where materials and step by step guidance are fully provided.

Packed with nostalgic flair and playful surprises, this lively reimagining celebrates love, rivalry, and the undeniable ingenuity of women.
